From Struggle to Celebration: The Journey, Sound, and Spirit of BUGZEEE
Every generation produces artists who do not merely sing music, but live it through their stories. For Enobong Emmanuel Akpan—known globally by his stage name BUGZEEE—music is a living, breathing tapestry woven from the threads of heritage, diaspora struggles, faith, and unyielding optimism.
Hailing from Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, and now based in the UK, BUGZEEE has built a distinct sonic identity bridging African rhythms and contemporary cross-cultural soundscapes.
From early releases like Sugarcane (2013) and Today and Tomorrow (2015) to acclaimed studio projects like 7 Shades of Bugzeee and Resilient, BUGZEEE has consistently turned lived experience into purpose-driven Afro-fusion and Afropop.
In this exclusive 4THECULTURE MAGAZINE Spotlight, BUGZEEE takes us inside his creative evolution, navigating the diaspora experience, and gearing up for his highly anticipated third studio album, Ready 2 Groove.
THE ORIGIN: Finding the Sonic Frequency
For BUGZEEE, discovering a signature sound was never an instantaneous moment of magic; it was the product of daily dedication, trial, and organic discovery.
"I would say it came through consistency and experimentation. The more I recorded, the more I began to understand what worked for me, what felt natural, and how I wanted my music to connect with people."
While rooted firmly in Afro-fusion and Afropop, BUGZEEE resists being boxed into static categories.
"I see myself as an evolving artist, and I’m always open to exploring new sounds and pushing my creative boundaries. Finding your sound isn’t about reaching a final destination; it’s about continuing to grow while staying true to who you are."
THE CRAFT: Unfiltered Creative Flow
Listeners might assume that crafting hit melodies requires meticulous, rigid engineering. For BUGZEEE, the most profound pieces of music arrive when he steps out of his own way and lets intuition guide the pen.
"Sometimes, when I’m trying to create lyrics, my mind starts developing the melody and storyline almost effortlessly. I’m not always sitting there trying to force words or figure out exactly what to say. Ideas just begin to flow, and I follow where creativity takes me.
That’s one of the beautiful things about making music—you can start with an idea and discover something completely different along the way. I’ve learned to give myself room for that process rather than trying to control every part of it."
THE VISION: Living Your Authentic Truth
Amid the fast-paced nature of the music industry and modern life, BUGZEEE’s core message to his listeners remains grounded, deeply human, and urgent:
"My message to everyone who listens to my music is simple: live your truth. Life is too short, and time moves much faster than we sometimes realise. Don’t spend your life trying to meet everybody else’s expectations or putting off the things that genuinely make you happy.
For me, life isn’t only about what you achieve. It’s also about the experiences you have, the memories you create, and the person you become along the way. I want my music to remind people that, regardless of what they’re going through, they should never forget to live."
THE SOUNDTRACK: The Diaspora Journey Through "STRUGGLE"
If BUGZEEE's life were put on the big screen, one song stands out as the ultimate opening theme: "STRUGGLE"—the standout track from 7 Shades of Bugzeee.
"As a Black man living far away from my home country, I’ve had to navigate experiences that I believe many Africans in the diaspora will understand. From encountering systemic racism to dealing with immigration and the challenges of settling in a new country, the journey hasn’t always been easy.
But I’ve always tried to maintain an optimistic outlook. I believe better days are possible, so I keep working hard, keep pushing forward, and pray that God continues to guide me. 'STRUGGLE' represents that part of my story—it reflects the challenges, the determination, and the hope that carries you through difficult seasons."
WHAT’S NEXT: Entering the Ready 2 Groove Era
Having built a strong reputation across performance stages like the ADF Festival, Afrofusion Experience, Kiss Camden, and Astons Bedford, BUGZEEE is preparing to release his third studio album: Ready 2 Groove.
If Resilient and 7 Shades of Bugzeee were about surviving the fire, Ready 2 Groove is about dancing in the joy that comes after.
"This album represents a new chapter for me, particularly after the challenges of settling in the United Kingdom. Sometimes you spend so much time trying to overcome obstacles that you forget to enjoy the journey itself.
With Ready 2 Groove, I want to embrace a different energy. It’s about enjoying life, partying with family, celebrating with friends, and appreciating the blessings that come our way. We’ve all got struggles, but we also deserve moments of happiness, connection, and celebration."
THE MANTRA: Grounded in Faith & Presence
When asked what keeps him grounded amidst the pressures of the music scene, BUGZEEE shares a philosophy that guides both his life and art:
“Stay true to yourself, trust God through the struggle, and never get so caught up chasing tomorrow that you forget to enjoy today.”
"It’s easy to become so focused on where you want to be that you forget to appreciate how far you’ve already come. Life isn’t just about the struggles we overcome or the success we achieve. It’s about the people we share it with and the moments we allow ourselves to enjoy."
